NAFLD (Non-alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease)

NAFLD encompasses a spectrum of disease states, from steatosis (fatty liver) to non-alcoholic steatohepatitis (also called NASH; steatosis with inflammatory changes) followed by progression to fibrosis, cirrhosis and hepatocellular carcinoma. Excess liver fat is believed to be a manifestation of the metabolic syndrome and not surprisingly NASH is associated with obesity, insulin resistance, dyslipidemia and type II diabetes in humans. Most obese adults have hepatic steatosis and at least one-third of these individuals will eventually develop worsening NAFLD. Therefore, the prevalence of NAFLD will likely rise with obesity rates.

As with many human diseases, fatty liver in rodents is also diet-inducible. Different dietary approaches produce different severities of disease along the NAFLD spectrum and likely work by unique mechanisms. 16. What is the difference between AIN-93G & AIN-93M, and AIN-76A?  93G和93M与76A的区别是什么? 
The American Society for Nutrition (formerly American Institute of Nutrition, AIN) has published formulas for purified diets determined by AIN to be adequate for rodents. The AIN-76A diet, published in 1977, became AIN-76A when slightly modified in 1980. However, they may well be nutritionally adequate beyond that time frame, especially if they are kept frozen until the package is opened. Both rat and mouse. Proportionally sized food hopper designs allow feeding of pelleted OpenSource Diets, ad libitum, for up to five days.


2. Can I install the BioDAQ food hopper to my own cage? 
If you provide us with the make and model of your standard home cage, we will purchase and modify the same cage or a similar one from one of several top manufacturers. See cages.


3. What is the minimum number of Sensors (PSCs) in a system? 
Our minimum electronic system starts at 8 sensors (PSCs).


4. What is the maximum number of Sensors (PSCs) in a system? 
You can operate 32 sensors using one Central Controller/ laptop pair.


5. Can I use the same sensor (PSC) for a rat and mouse? For a food and water hopper? 
Yes. The peripheral controller is interchangeable between rat and mouse and food and water hardware. We manufacture one type of sensor (PSC) and Central Controller. Each PSC can be used to monitor either rat or mouse and food or water. This, coupled with the modularity of the BioDAQ hardware, allows the same system to easily accommodate different investigators and experimental designs.


6. What is the delivery time? 
Depending on our in stock situation and current demand, delivery will run between 6 to 8 weeks.


7. Can I install the system on ventilated cages? 
In order to accept the cage mount we modify the cages by cutting a square opening on the front face of the cage which limits the effectiveness of a ventilation system.


8. Can I install the system on an auto water rack? 
Yes. An auto water rack is one of the preferred stable rack systems required for proper installation.


9. Can I install the system on my own rack? 
We would prefer that you use one of our standard Metro racks or Allentown auto water racks for stability reasons. The peripheral controllers are extremely sensitive to vibrations and an unstable rack will cause inaccurate readings. Let us know the make and model of your rack and provide a digital photo so we can evaluate the stability of your rack system. See racks.


10. Can I use my own computer to run the software? 
The software is bundled on the supplied laptop computer and an integrated part of the BioDAQ. You can connect remotely through a network to the laptop. We can provide technical assistance on how to load software and connect to a network.


11. Can I start with a smaller system and expand later? 
Yes, any system we provide has the potential to monitor up to 32 sensors (PSCs). Many of our customers have started with an 8 PSC system and the expanded to a complete 32 PSC system later.

Refined carbohydrate sources such as high fructose corn syrup (HFCS) are used in many processed foods and surveys in the U.S. have suggested that the intake of this sweetener has increased dramatically since the 1970s. As we have learned over the past few decades, an excess intake of refined carbohydrates is associated with increased weight gain, hypertriglyceridemia (hyper-TG), and insulin resistance (IR) in humans and animal models. In order to understand more about the impact of refined carbohydrates on health and therapies to reduce these metabolic syndrome (MS) phenotypes, certain rodent models have been useful. Purified diets containing around 60% – 70% (by energy) fructose or sucrose (which is a 50:50 molar mixture of fructose and glucose) are capable of elevating TG and glucose production in the liver, ultimately leading to IR and hyper-TG relative to diets containing mainly glucose carbohydrate sources (i.e. dextrose, corn starch). The D12492 Story

On April 22, 1999 the first box of pelleted D12492 was shipped. In 1999 Research Diets shipped 150 kg of D12492, and today ships over 10,000 kg of D12492 monthly. Today, there are more DIO rodent models made using our diets than any other diets in the world. More than 2,000,000 kilos of D12492 has shipped to more than 3,000 researchers, working at more than 800 separate institutions in more than 60 countries .

D12492 began as a custom diet and because of its continued use, is now a gold standard for (DIO) Diet-Induced Obesity research. As its popularity grew, D12492 became an “In-Stock Diet”. What It Means

Since the first box shipped, these diets have become the standard for research in the field of obesity, diabetes, and metabolic syndrome. Top worldwide breeders Charles River, Taconic and JAX, feed D12492 to produce DIO mice for the research community. A recent Google Scholar search revealed over 3,600 publications in which these diets were utilized. By using these standards, investigators are privy to a wide range of reference data from an expanding research publication base.

D12492 is only 1 of the more than 20,000 diets we’ve formulated and produced and there’s more every day.

A Word of Caution

Don’t be misled by diet manufacturers who claim to offer the same OpenSource diet formulas as Research Diets, Inc. Though it is true that all our formulas are open, there may be differences in the sources of ingredients or the vitamin and mineral mixes used to produce the diet.
